We all seem to be living in a faster, and busier paced world. Many households have two parents working, or only one parent, or may not be married at all, and have a demanding career. Even stay at home moms often have many projects with their children, community or personal activities.
There are still a lot of people that prefer to train their own puppy, or want to receive their puppy as young as possible. However, others would much prefer to receive an already trained puppy! Housetraining a young puppy can sometimes get frustrating, and it does demand a lot of time! Being right there with the puppy most of the time is best! Which is something that not everyone can do.
An untrained puppy may cry, or even get car sick when traveling. Sometimes even pottying in their crate. An untrained puppy may fight a leash, and pee on your carpet. An untrained puppy may cry at night, or anytime when left alone. May chew on things that you may not want chewed.
We here at Windswept Kennels are willing to go through all that for you, in order to deliver the best puppy experience! We have had many years of working with dogs, as Baron and I both showed and trained dogs in 4-H, and we spend most of our time with our dogs and puppies that we raise and own.
How it Works
We offer training at any time, you can decide before it is born or when it is 9 weeks or older, the only thing is that we do not start training until they are AT LEAST 9 weeks of age, because by then the puppy is weaned and ready to start learning, older ages are also fine. Half down is due on a younger puppy to reserve you a space in the program, with the last half due before you receive your puppy. With an older puppy, such as with our package deals we may ask for slightly less than half of the cost. We can only train a limited number of puppies at a time, so space is limited. If you are interested in training it is best to get your deposit in right away.
What we need from you
We ask only for basic information, we just want to know things such as housing, family, work schedules, lifestyles, ( such as if you do a lot of traveling) and other pets that you may have in your household, this way we train the puppy to your needs. It is always best if you name your puppy right away, especially if you chose a very young pup, so that they learn their name right away. Again, we do limit the number of puppies that we train, so that each puppy receives the time and attention that it needs. Please fill out a puppy contract, so that we are sure to know which puppy is yours, along with the deposit on the training.
Our Training Program
We offer two levels of training depending on what your needs are, they are:
Basic Training
Basic usually requires 1-3 weeks, depending on each puppy, but 2 weeks is average. Advanced Training usually requires 6 weeks, but with certain puppies may require an extra week. During the Basic Training your puppy learns:
- House Trained- In the Basic Training your puppy is started on Housetraining, but we work mostly on getting them crate trained, so there is always the possibility of mistakes. For the first 48 hours it is imperative that you keep your puppy on a STRICT potty routine, and keep a constant eye on your puppy, because when moved into a new environment with a new routine some puppies might have a few accidents if they aren't started on their new routine IMMEDIATLY.
- Sit- Your puppy will be taught the "sit" command. It is perfectly normal when your puppy is moved into a new environment, that they might get so excited and temporarily forget their commands. Just be patient and keep trying, we suggest saying your puppies name and then "sit" while placing your hand under his/her chin and lifting up. This will cause them to turn all of their attention on you and perform the desired action.
- Crate-Trained- Crate training is when your puppy can safely be left in their crate for the number of hours of their age plus one. So say that your puppy is 8 weeks old, that means that your puppy can safety be left in their crate for 3 hours, before needing to go out. That is unless you have just fed your puppy, then it is not a good idea to put them in their crate and expect them to not make a mess. With crate training, it also gets the puppy used to traveling, so that they do not cry during a car ride or throw up or even go potty. We make sure that your puppy feels safe in their crate and comfortable enough to not bark or throw a big fit when you take them some place.
Advanced Training
- House-Trained- Your puppy is house broken along with leash trained, although your puppy can also be let out and return to your doorstep, so if you have a fenced in yard your puppy can run and play with out being restrained. Otherwise if you don't have a fenced in yard, but want to let your puppy out without you, we suggest a Dog Trolley that is secured between two trees, buildings, etc. and then you just snap on a leash like you would normally and then just open your door! Puppy can safely run between the trees etc. and you don't have to worry. It is a great way to take the worry out of walking your dog! For the first 48 hours it is imperative that you keep your puppy on a STRICT potty routine, and keep a constant eye on your puppy, because when moved into a new environment with a new routine some puppies might have a few accidents if they aren't started on their new routine IMMEDIATLY. Also for the first week or so your puppy should be put in their crate at night until you learn their potty habits.

- Drop(Available only in Advanced Training)-Your puppy will learn the "drop" command, and as with all commands and a new environment, some puppies will get so excited that they temporarily forget, but patients is the key. We suggest that if you are having a problem getting your puppy to "drop" you say their name and then "drop" while slowly pressing on their hindquarters and slowly and gently pulling the front legs out from under them until they are in the "drop" or "lay" position. Praise your puppy and allow them to get up. Next time try it without helping and see if they do it on their own.
- Heel(Available only in Advanced Training)-your puppy learns the basics of heel and will be able to follow on command.
- Begin Stay(Available only in Advanced Training)- In the Advanced Training we begin working with your puppy on the "stay" command, although we do not guarantee that your puppy will fully retain or obey this command, we are just getting them used to hearing it, and obeying it somewhat.
- NEW! We are beginning to offer Bell Training for your puppy (available ONLY with the Advanced Training). Bell Training is where you have a string of bells on your door handle, and then your dog rings them whenever they need to go potty. This is also an additional fee. We are very excited to try this and hope that it goes over well!
All Training comes with a weekly progress report and photos!
If you choose to have an older puppy trained, the shipping on an older puppy is $300, and that includes all of it's puppy vaccinations, including Rabies. Spaying or Neutering is available for any puppy 5 months or older, and is an additional fee. Also we use Positive Reinforcement when training your puppy, we also will never use a shock collar or any violent way of training your puppy.
